Agribusiness development strategy for Ethiopia
Client: United Nations International Development Organisation (UNIDO)
Area: Ethiopia
Timeline: July 2007 – Current
Details: UNIDO have commissioned the development of an agri-business development strategy for Ethiopia. The country is fertile and there is considerable primary agriculture. However, full market (local and export) exploitation is far from having been achieved and the objective of the strategy is to assess how value add can be introduced into the sector through further primary as well as secondary activities.
The local brewery, for example, imports over 50% of its required maltings from Europe as local suppliers are not producing sufficient quantities. The potential does however exist.
Project activities entail:
- Field research
- Interviews with small and larger scale farmers
- Interviews with industry reliant on agricultural produce
- Market analysis
- Pricing analysis
- Sector value chain analysis and development
- Stakeholder and focus group workshops
- Design of government support based mechanisms to stimulate growth in the sector
