Green electricity for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg 2002
Client: AGAMA Energy / United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Area: Johannesburg, South Africa
Timeline: June 2002 – February 2003
Details: The key objective in this project was to provide electricity from renewable resources to the major convention centres and sites for the duration of the World Summit and to certify the amount of green electricity provided through certification.
OneWorld, in conjunction with the project lead, AGAMA Energy and other partners, assisted in bringing green electricity to the World Summit in Johannesburg. In sourcing producers of green electricity, the project team was able to work with the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs, the National Energy Regulator and City Power to ensure that the right mechanisms, producers and transactions were put in place to enable the delivery of green electricity to the World Summit.
Foreign investment and trade was sought and foreign renewable energy certificates were procured, which assisted in the sourcing of the required green electricity. The project necessitated the scoping of renewable resources available locally and provided critical information to further policy and regulatory development in South Africa.
