Community development toolkits for pioneering sustainable practices in the extractive sector
Client: International Council for Mining and Metals (ICMM) and World Bank
Area: All SADC countries with mining interests
Timeline: June 2003 – April 2004
Details: Our brief was to assess the social impact, and conflict management and dispute resolution components of this project. Funded by the World Bank in conjunction with the mining industry, it entailed research and engagement with all stakeholders in the sector throughout the SADC region.
The outcome was two ‘toolkits’ (one for each of the described components) for use on a practical level in the implementation of sustainable mining practices. These toolkits are published and available on the ICMM website: www.icmm.com
The key activities of OneWorld on this project included:
- A full review of the regulatory, policy and institutional framework of mining activities in all relevant SADC countries.
- Community scoping – interviews and analysis of key issues
- Stakeholder engagement – interviews and design of processes
- Scoping and analysis of natural resource and land use issues with particular regard to impact on communities, specifically in areas of potential conflict
- Scoping and analysis of all types of conflict including those that have previously arisen (and the resolution thereof); potential conflicts (and how they impact on mining development) and developing a framework for dealing with such.
