George Mobility Strategy: socio-economic study
Client: Ninham Shand and the Western Cape Department of Transport
Area: George, Western Cape
Timeline: December 2006 – Current
Details: OneWorld was contracted to carry out a socio-economic baseline study for establishing a public transport system for the George Local Municipality. The George transport strategy is being treated as a pilot and, based on the outcomes, may be rolled out across South Africa.
The study aims to establish a baseline for longer term monitoring and evaluation of the relationship between improved, accessible public transport and local socio-economic development. The study also aims to assess the skills development requirements of the George population as linked to accessible, reliable public transport. The programme aims to stimulate economic growth in order to expand job opportunities for the underprivileged and target poverty reduction through increased opportunities. The present study attempts to find out to what extent the community will benefit, both economically and socially, from the proposed public transport transformation process.
